Meet the Team: Richard Cockburn

In this Meet the Team article, we hear from Richard, our Business Development Manager, who works out of our Isle of Man office.

With nearly two decades in the financial sector, Richard is responsible for growing our Citywealth IFC Awards Trust Company of the Year 2024 award winning trust services business in the Isle of Man.

What team are you in at Affinity, and what does your role involve?

Business Development. I like to add value. I meet prospective clients, ascertain their needs, and find solutions. I think laterally and outside the box, evaluate the client in their entirety, and think outside the box to find solutions that are not obvious initially.

What is your previous work experience, and do you hold any qualifications?

I have been working in the financial industry for the past 17 years. I have worked in different sectors such as pensions, banking, trust, and corporate. I believe that I have constantly been challenged in my various roles. I need to be kept motivated and challenged. I am lucky enough that this industry will always be challenging with its complexities, and there will always be new subjects to learn and develop.

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Sanguine, Erudite, Energetic, Entrepreneurial, and Unorthodox.

What do you enjoy most about your job and the company?

I like meeting people, spending enjoyable time with them, and finding solutions to improve their lives.

Do you have any daily non-negotiable habits or hobbies you enjoy?

Nothing is non-negotiable or mandatory. Time is the most valuable commodity, so I try to use it productively. I enjoy waking up early and exercising like Mark Wahlberg, cycling like Miguel Indurain up Isle of Man hills by the sea, golfing to win like Seve Ballesteros, and doing business like Jerry Maguire…! Oh, and I like to have a laugh and travel, too….when time permits…

What’s the best part about living on the Isle of Man?

The best thing is that it is “Far From The Madding Crowd”…! After 20+ years of working and playing hard in the epicentre of capitalism, London and across the globe, the Isle of Man is a great antidote…! From an Epicurean lifestyle to a more Stoic one…

What are your current professional goals?

Be known to be a formidable force in the industry with the team around me.

What are your current personal goals?

I want to stay healthy and physically fit, to look after myself and those I care about.

I’m going to do two things: take my Dad to Las Vegas and have a bet for my late Mum on Red, and play in the US Open 9-ball tournament in Atlantic City…Both are going to happen….
