What sector do you work in and have you any thoughts to share about the industry right now?

I work within the HR function of the Group, which involves personnel and development

Please tell us what led you to this career and how has it has progressed so far?

My career began in the life assurance industry as a Junior Administrator. I spent 20 years with this company, and with it being a small workforce it provided me with the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills. As the company grew in size, I was able to specialize my skills in different functions, including analytical skills, system developments, training and staff development. From there I progressed in the development function, and become a Training and Development Manager which led my career into Human Resources. I have worked in Human Resources since in within the financial services and education sectors.

How is your day at Affinity and what do you do?

My role as Head of Group HR involves me working on our current HR policies to ensure that all the HR strategic perspective is in line with the Groups goals and objectives. I thereafter implement relevant HR policies and procedures which will support the achievement of business objectives through people. I support the team overall with a focus on improving communication across all levels in the company. I also focus on training & development in the company, which involves supporting performance management and individual goal setting.

Are there any skills you are currently working on?

I have only recently joined therefore I am currently trying to develop my knowledge of the work that we do and the practices and policies involved. I am focusing on how I can make a difference with my HR skills and experience to improve our place of work.

What aspects do you love about your job and the company?

I love the people, and the fact that no two days are ever the same in my role. I like helping people and I believe this is a wonderful place to work, but ‘we’ as in everyone has to work together to keep the environment and culture as lovely as it is. There is always room for improvement and its only going to get better.

Can you tell us your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?

Apart from a large glass of wine (not every night), I enjoy walking, painting and decorating. Dare I say, I am also a keen Liverpool FC supporter.

Do you have any passions outside of work?

Not sure it’s a passion but I love travelling, and getting off Fraggle Rock as often as I can

Finally, what is something you have done but will never do again?

Ape Mann!!
