Meet the Malta Team: Ryan Cain

In this meet the team article, we hear from Ryan, our Client Accounts Administrator in Malta. If you would like to know more on the corporate services we provide in Malta, visit our Malta company page here.

What sector do you work in and have you any thoughts to share about the industry right now?

I am currently working in the corporate services/accountancy sector and have worked in numerous varying roles within the area for about 6 years now, including insurance and gambling. Accountancy is a very popular choice for a lot of young people these days as there is a lot of potential to progress up the career ladder at a faster pace, especially with the emergence of new sectors on the IOM and other similar jurisdictions, such as eGaming and more recently esports.

Please tell us what led you to this career and how has it has progressed so far?

It started when I was at school where I decided that I wanted to pursue accountancy as a career. After A-Levels, I went on to attend the Isle of Man College for Further & Higher Education, where I studied towards a degree in Accounting & Finance which was affiliated with the University of Chester at the time. Through my time there, I decided that I wanted to learn on a more practical basis, which led me to a position at Crowe Morgan accountancy firm as a Junior Accounts Administrator, where I could begin to put skills into practice. Since then I have been searching for the right place to settle down and complete my accountancy studies, which led me to Affinity.

How is your day at Affinity and what do you do?

My current role is Group Client Accounts Administrator, and I work with Malta-based clients for which I produce management accounts and complete VAT returns each quarter.

Are there any skills you are currently working on?

I am currently working towards my ACCA qualification.

What aspects do you love about your job and the company?

I have been working here for 10 months and I have loved every minute of it. I am thrilled to be a part of the company and I am excited for the future with Affinity.

Can you tell us your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?

Usually I will take our dog (Stan) for a long walk along one of the beaches or around one of the plantations or reservoirs. He is a 4 year-old Caucasian Shepherd, German Shepherd and Rottweiler cross, and he is now living his best life on the IOM having been abandoned a few years ago in Romania. At home I relax by watching Disney+ or Netflix.

Do you have any passions outside of work?

Weather permitting, my favourite outdoor activity is playing golf. I have been playing since 2008 and 4.8 is my current handicap. My aim is to eventually compete in the Isle of Man Mens Golf Championship, which would have been fulfilled this year had I not caught COVID the week before…

Other than that, I am a passionate football fan and I was born a Manchester City fan (which worked out nicely in the end!). I am also a keen pool player.

I also really enjoy listening to rock music and playing electric guitar, with my favourite bands being AC/DC, Guns n’ Roses and the Foo Fighters, all of whom I have been lucky enough to see live in concert.

Finally, what is something you have done but will never do again?

Difficult question as I don’t have many regrets, but it would probably have to be working night shifts. Did it for about 4 months in 2019 and it was awful. It also greatly affected my physical and mental well-being, as well as my social life. Would not recommend it at all!
